When it comes to naming molecular compounds (where the 1st element is a non-metal), there are three simple rules to follow.
1. List the elements in order as you see them in the formula.
2. Change the ending of the SECOND ELEMENT to "ide."
3. Use prefixes to identify the # of atoms of each element are in a molecule of the compound.
1- Mono 6- Hexa
2- Di 7- Hepta
3- Tri 8- Octa
4- Tetra 9- Nona
5- Penta 10- Deca
Here is an example: H2O ( I can't use subscripts for the "2").
1. Hydrogen Oxygen
2. Hydrogen Oxide
3. Hydrogen Monoxide
Another Example: Carbon Tetrachloride
1. C Cl
2. one C and 4 Cl's give us CCl4
Your homework over the break is to work on the 1st 4 pages of problems in naming molecular compounds. You should stop at the 5th page of the packet with a "46" on the bottom of the page.
