Elements are the building blocks of all matter.
Compounds are chemical combinations of 2 or more elements. These compounds have different properties than the elements that they are formed with.
A physical combination of 2 or more substances (elements, compounds, etc) is called a mixture.
There are two types of mixtures- heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. They are both physical combinations of 2 or more substances and they retain the properties of the substances that make them up. Heterogeneous mixtures exist in more than 1 phase (sand in water, chicken soup, etc). Homogeneous mixtures exist in 1 phase (salt water, our atmosphere).
Since mixtures are physical combinations, it is possible to separate them into their individual parts. There are several methods shown below (click on the name for the video):
